Signs Your HVAC System Was Improperly Sized
It's not "bad luck" that your AC keeps breaking. It's likely bad math.
Most homeowners assume that if their AC turns on and gets cold, it's working properly. In reality, a system can be destroying itself for years due to improper sizing.
Watch out for these signs hvac system improperly sized.
Signs of an OVERSIZED System
This is the most common problem in the US (estimated 50%+ of homes).
- Short Cycling: The unit runs for 5-7 minutes and shuts off. It satisfies the thermostat too quickly.
- High Humidity: The house feels "clammy" or sticky at 72°F. The unit didn't run long enough to pull water out of the air.
- Noisy Ducts: It sounds like a jet engine because too much air is being forced through small ducts.
- Premature Failure: The compressor burns out in 7 years instead of 15 because of the constant on/off stress.
Signs of an UNDERSIZED System
Less common, but very noticeable.
- Never Satisfied: It runs constantly from 1 PM to 8 PM and never reaches the set temperature.
- Warm Rooms: Distant bedrooms are significantly hotter than the rest of the house.
The Frozen Coil Paradox
Ironically, an oversized unit can sometimes freeze into a block of ice.
If the unit is too big for the ductwork, airflow is restricted. The coil gets too cold because there isn't enough warm air passing over it. The condensate freezes, blocking more air, until the whole system locks up.
How to Diagnosis It
The only way to know for sure is to compare your installed tonnage to a Manual J calculation. If you have a 4-Ton unit in a house that calculates to 2.5 Tons, you have found your problem.
